Graveyard Cupcakes

Our graveyard cupcakes are brilliant fun to make and they taste great. We crushed Oreo cookies to make 'soil' and rich tea fingers as headstones. For a finishing touch, we melted some white chocoloate and made bones using a mould (find it in Hobbycraft). Get creative this halloween and make something fabulous for your Halloween party.

This recipe will make about six cupcakes and shouldn't take more than an hour.


For the Cupcakes
100g (4oz) butter, softened
100g (4oz) caster sugar
100g (4oz) self raising flour
2 eggs
 
For the Icing
100g (4oz) butter, softened
225g (8oz) icing sugar
30ml (2tbsp) milk
A few drops of vanilla essence
Black food colouring (paste colours work the best)
 
For the Decoration
Three or four Oreo cookies
Rich tea finger biscuits
Orange fondant icing
Icing sugar for piping onto biscuits (headstones)
Make the Cupcakes
1) Cream together the butter and caster sugar until it is light and fluffy
2) Beat in the eggs one at a time, adding a tablespoon of flour for each one
3) Gently fold in the remaining flour with a metal spoon
4) Place cupcake cases in a muffin tin and spoon the mixture into the cases (about 6 cakes)
5) Bake the cupcakes in a pre-heated oven (gas mark 4 / 180°C) for 25-30 minutes, or until risen and golden brown
6) Remove from the oven and allow the cakes to cool
 
The Icing on the Cakes
1) Beat the butter until it is soft
2) Gradually beat in the sugar and milk
3) Beat the mixture until it is light and fluffy
4) Stir in the vanilla and the black colouring then put the mixture in the fridge to chill a little
5) Use and icing bag and pipe the icing onto the cooled cupcakes
For the Soil
We used Oreo cookies to create the soil effect. Separate the cookies from the cream filling and crumble the biscuits. Sprinkle the crumbs over the icing to create some "just dug" soil on the graves.
 
For the Headstones
We used rich tea finger biscuits for the headstones. Use a piping bag to add some lettering or decoration using icing sugar, then push the biscuit into the cake.
 
For the Pumpkins
Roll a small ball from some orange fondant icing. Holding the top and bottom of the ball press a table knife into the icing to create vertical lines and shape the ball into a pumpkin. For a finishing touch, why not add a green stalk to the pumpkins using some green icing.
